Lieutenant Turner dies while covering a retreat, and Zussman is taken prisoner by the Nazis. Daniels faces Pierson’s troubled past, finds out information about the Remagen Bridge, raids air bases, and storms the empty Berga concentration camp in a terrifying rescue. The story ends with the Allies taking the last bridge over the Rhine, which represents their victory. Daniels then goes home to his family and honors his fallen brother at his grave with his Bronze Star, which adds a lot of emotional weight to the story in the midst of all the war’s horrors.
