Storyline

In the far-off future, the beautiful town of New Soviets sits peacefully among forests and mountains. Its residents recreate echoes of the past with panel houses and transmission towers. When portals open, strange alien creatures come out and kidnap Martha’s sister, throwing the community into chaos. With a strange letter that hints at salvation, Martha takes her great-grandfather’s trophy axe and sets out on a dangerous journey to save her brother and stop the invaders who are threatening her home and maybe all of humanity.

As Martha digs deeper, the story unfolds through clever conversations, environmental storytelling, and new information about where the monsters came from. Meeting strange people in strange towns and having a loyal friend add layers of humor and friendship, while rising tensions lead to an unexpected, twist-filled climax. This mix of heartfelt motivation and cosmic absurdity makes a story that is both simple and interesting, moving players through a world where a young girl’s determination clashes with interdimensional horror.

Gameplay

The main part of JustAxe is using the axe skillfully. Players can throw it in eight directions to fight, stick it into walls to cling to and jump off of, or use it to solve puzzles in forests, waterfalls, mountains, and spooky alien worlds. To get through mazes, avoid pursuers, and find hidden paths, you need to combine jumps, wall-runs, and interactions with the environment, like activating switches or avoiding traps. After upgrades, you can go back and explore new areas.

Combat feels punchy against grotesque enemies, like faceless hounds and fleshy horrors. Health pickups drop during fast-paced battles that reward quick dodges and tactical axe throws. A companion you meet in the middle of the game gives you new skills for finding hidden items and hunting for secrets. There are also timed runs and riddle sequences to keep things moving quickly. This metroidvania-lite structure encourages exploration by mixing fast-paced chases with satisfying “aha” moments in interactive landscapes.
